State of the Station

2005/2006 Academic Year

The 2005-2006 season represented a returned focus to the quality standards on which WOLV was founded. In addition to recommitting our staff to the production of top-notch student television, the internal structure of the station was strengthened through the introduction of professional standards and benchmarks. The following is a list of accomplishments, by department, over the course of the year:

Sports Department:

For the WOLV Sports Department, 2005-2006 was a year of development and expansion. With a young core of leaders, the department has grown as an outlet for quality sports television. The following are some of this past academic year’s highlights:

  • Weekly production of five compelling sports programs including: Varsity Blue (the Michigan Football Show), Overtime (the Michigan Hockey Show), Wolverine Alley-Oop (the Michigan Basketball Show), WOLV SportsNite (the weekly Michigan Sports Wrap Up Show) and You Say Maize, I Say Blue (the Sports Entertainment and Commentary Show).
  • The department covered six hockey games at Yost Ice Arena this season, including the concluding game of Michigan’s CCHA playoff quarterfinals series.
  • For the first time in years, WOLV returned to Crisler Arena for full game coverage of Michigan Women’s Basketball and plans are in place for more coverage of the Lady Wolverines next season.
  • For the first time in WOLV’s history, the department added the production of the athletic department’s charity event, Mock Rock 2006, from Hill Auditorium.
As the WOLV Sports Department looks to the future, they move forward with a high-quality collection of in-studio shows and the knowledge and experience to present outstanding coverage of various Michigan sporting and special events.

Sales/Marketing and Public Relations Department:

This year the Sales/Marketing and PR team endeavored to continue to develop and improve the business aspect of WOLV. The accomplishments of the department include:

  • Acquired 100 WOLV t-shirts free of charge, to be used to promote and advertise the station.
  • Negotiated package of advertisements with MSA to run throughout the winter semester.
  • Helped organize and implement several social events to promote station unity and camaraderie including the annual Super Bowl Party and Pizza Nights.
Our goals for the future include selling more advertising space to local businesses in addition to finding new and exciting ways to create a positive reputation for WOLV around campus.

Operations Department:

Under new leadership this year, the Operations Department has been a staple of technological and logistical support for WOLV. With the welcome influx of quality capital goods, the implementation of a new purchasing strategy and the willingness to engage in more on-site event coverage, the Operations Department has much to be proud of. Some of the Ops Department’s accomplishments include:

  • Significant purchases this year include a professional grade wireless microphone system and green screen that is tailor-made for our studio.
  • Scheduling and taping important live events including the Winter 2006 MSA Presidential Debates and the Katherine Schell benefit concert at the Michigan Theater.
  • Space-use, equipment and station quality standard checklists have been constructed to ensure cohesive station processes between show tapings and departments.
The Operations Department is optimistic that next year will hold even more on-location production opportunities. In addition, next year’s purchasing strategy will combine with an already solid technical background gathered this year to make the 2006-2007 academic year an Operations success.

News Department

The 2005-06 academic year was a groundbreaking one for the News Department. As a whole, participation increased at least two-fold from last year with much more consistency. The News Department is incredibly proud of the following:

  • A new management structure was implemented this year which included three producers, eight editors, one floor manager, one executive producer and one news director.
  • The News Department debuted a new television magazine program entitled “Inside Michigan,” which pursued campus-wide investigative journalism.
  • The nightly news program NewsFeed reintroduced a weather segment using chromakey technology, the newly acquired green screen, and recruited students from the AOSS department as weather anchors.
  • NewsFeed also added its first ever ‘beat reporting’ system that recruited, trained, and sent out editors to cover timely news events around campus.
  • Professor Tony Collings of the Communications Department was brought on board to advise the department regarding the journalistic aspects of the news industry.
The training and experience granted to WOLV News Department members is on par with the top television journalism schools in the country and, as a department, they continue to ensure that all WOLV alumni are the Leaders and the Best in the television industry.

Entertainment Department:

The 2005-06 academic year was a positive one here at WOLV. In continuing their constant search for quality entertainment programming, the Entertainment Department is proud of developing the following:

  • Big House Beat, the aerobics show, continued through the fall semester, completing 5 episodes.
  • The Entertainment Buzz was created and is an exciting addition to the WOLV Entertainment lineup. EBuzz covers anything and everything having to do with the world of entertainment and has been very well received.
  • Michigan Amp was approved for production in the Winter of 2006 and is a show focused on the world of music, from the local scene to national acts. It features live performances, interviews, and news regarding all things music
For next year, it is the goal of the entertainment department to expand further, increasing the number of shows while maintaining a level of quality and excellence that WOLV has come to expect from the Entertainment department.

The 2005-2006 season has been a source of pride among WOLV leadership. Our rededication to offering a positive, student-based learning experience has established WOLV as the premier on-campus source for aspiring television journalists. The ability of the station leadership to work as a cohesive unit sparked the opportunity for success throughout all departments. With newly elected leadership taking office in early-April, WOLV looks to build on the achievements of 2005-2006, and encourages the continued quality and success of student television at the University of Michigan.
